Three-legged dog has been in shelter for a year since being surrendered, still looking for a home

Every shelter dog dreams of finding their forever home, but it takes some longer than others. Some dogs wait months or years before finding the right home.

That’s the case for one three-legged dog, who has been waiting at a shelter for a year after being surrendered — but the sweet dog is still looking for a home.

The Spartanburg Humane Society, in South Carolina, shared a post about a dog in their care named Vinny. Vinny first arrived at the shelter as a stray puppy in 2021, and had a wrongly-healed broken rear leg that had to be amputated.

But Vinny doesn’t let being a “tripod” hold him back: “He don’t let having 3 legs stop him from much. He loves going for walks and running and playing,” the shelter wrote.

Vinny was adopted out in 2022, and it seemed like a happy ending for the three-legged rescue. But after some time with his new owner, Vinny was surrendered back to the shelter last August: Spartanburg Humane says that the owner was “going through some homing situations.”

The abandonment took a toll on Vinny. “Since being back Vinny is trying to cope,” the shelter wrote. “He definitely would prefer to be anywhere else but back.”

Unfortunately, Vinny has struggled to find a new home, and the now-3-year-old dog has been back at the shelter for nearly a year now.

A major hurdle is that Vinny doesn’t get along well with other dogs. Vinny would do best in a quiet home with no other pets, but since most adopters have other dogs at home, his options are limited.

“We just have no idea what all this precious dog has endured,” shelter CEO Angel Cox told McClatchy News. “We have tried and will keep trying to integrate him with other dogs, but so far his only way into a play yard with other dogs requires a muzzle.”

But the shelter hasn’t given up on him, and hopes that there is a perfect home for Vinny somewhere.

“It’s time this boy found his freedom ride and get his happily ever furever that he really does deserve,” they wrote on Facebook.

If you are interested in Vinny, you can pay him a visit at the Spartanburg Humane Society and find out more information on their adoption website.
