The first time I saw the dog, it was covered in sores, scratching itself relentlessly. Its skin condition was severe, and its thin frame suggested neglect. With its few remaining patches of fur and eyes full of sadness, it looked utterly helpless. Judging by its state, it was likely abandoned by its owner.
Feeling sorry for the poor creature, I offered it some water and dog food, which it devoured hungrily. Initially, I planned to walk away after helping it. But as night fell, I couldn’t shake the worry of leaving it outside. I decided to take it home, though sneaking a stray dog past the apartment security wasn’t easy. I quietly brought it through the garage and into my home.
Once inside, the dog seemed to sense it had found a safe place. It followed me closely, trying to please me, as if desperate for acceptance. Its eagerness to belong was touching. I ordered medicine online to treat its skin condition and prepared for the long recovery process.
The next day, I began treating its sores and ulcers. Despite the discomfort, the dog stayed calm and cooperative throughout the dipping and medication process. It seemed to understand I was trying to help. Over the following days, I noticed scars covering its body from lice and tick bites. It endured the pain bravely, never whining or resisting.
As time passed, the dog grew closer to me. It started responding to my touch, wagging its tail and enjoying the affection. During walks, it stayed by my side, running over whenever I called. Its loyalty and gentleness touched my heart. I decided to name it “September,” after the month I found it. A suggestion from an online friend made the name feel even more meaningful.
September made remarkable progress. It began recognizing its name and showed signs of its previous training, such as going to the grassy field to relieve itself. Slowly but surely, it grew healthier. Its once bare and scarred skin began to heal, and patches of new fur started to grow.
Two months later, September’s transformation was extraordinary. Its coat was fuller, its wounds healed, and its energy returned. Though my work in Zhejiang is temporary, and I may have to leave the region or even go abroad, I am committed to ensuring September’s future. My plan is to find a loving, permanent home for it.
Rescuing September has been a deeply rewarding experience. While saving one dog might not change the world, it has undoubtedly changed September’s world forever. Watching it regain trust, health, and happiness is a reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a significant difference. For now, I will continue to care for September, ensuring it thrives in a life full of love and hope.
