Animal rescuers in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu were saddened and shocked recently as they witnessed a barbaric act of animal cruelty.
They watched as local municipal officers rounded up stray dogs from the streets, tied their mouths shut, and tossed them into garbage trucks.
According to one media source, the Tiruvallur Police arrested a former police official and his son for allegedly assaulting a young animal rights activist who questioned their behavior.
It all started when Sai Vignesh, who runs the Almighty Animal Care Sanctuary, heard cries of dogs coming from the street. He witnessed the workers tossing the animals one after another into the truck.
Sal reported how upsetting it was for the dogs, whom he reports were all sterilized and placed back onto the streets. Sai claims the authorities had “no reason to catch them.”
Officials attempted to justify their actions by saying they were simply relocating the dogs. Sai phoned the police, and in the meantime, the men responsible for the barbaric act are accused of abusing Sai.
They allegedly threatened him and used foul language at him. Sai’s father came outside to help, and that’s when Sai said the men got violent.
“They hit me on my face and head, and when my father tried to stop them, they pushed him to the ground too,” Sai claimed.
The duo was arrested and taken to jail. They have been identified as Elanchezhian and his son Aravindaselvan, and were recently released on conditional bail.
The News Minute reported an “FIR has been registered and they have been booked under section 294(b) (whoever sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. ”
Thanks to everyone who stepped up to save these helpless animals.
