Ashlyn ended up a high-kill shelter in Gwinnett County, Georgia, underweight and with what seemed like a bad case of mange.
Thankfully, she was saved by the New England Humane Society before she would have been euthanized, in October 2017, and went into a foster home.
After being examined at the vet, they determined that what looked like manage was actually caused by chemical burns. Her entire back from her neck to her tail was damaged, itchy and sore.
She was also diagnosed with cancerous tumors under her skin. She was given antibiotics, along with medicated baths to help the pain.
Sadly, due to the tumors, vets only gave her a few weeks to live, but she would not have to live her final days in the shelter. They found a loving family who opened their home to her without hesitation.
But the only problem was that her new home was more than 400 miles away. That’s where Paul Steklenski, pilot and owner of Flying Fur Animal Rescue, stepped in to help.
Ashlyn got to be Steklenski’s co-pilot as he flew her to her new forever home, and it was definitely a trip that neither of them will ever forget.
Ashlyn was nervous at first, but after some dog biscuits and a lot of love, Ashlyn was feeling better in no time. She gazed out the window into the blue sky as she headed toward her new life. She even laid her head on Steklenski’s lap, which melted his heart.
When Ashlyn’s new foster mom, Tracy Lander, met Ashlyn at the airport, she was so happy to see her but also heartbroken at the same time.
Ashlyn was severely underweight (39 pounds when she should be 65-70) and Lander could see every rib poking out when she removed her sweater.
Ashlyn arrived at Lander’s home in January 2018, and nearly a year and a half later, she is still going strong!
With help from Lander and her treatments, Ashlyn’s condition significantly improved. She has since gained more than 20 pounds and can even go up and down stairs.
She plays with new doggy friends, and her skin has began to heal. She has defied the odds and proved her ‘death sentence’ wrong!
