Canine Royalty: Dog Owners From the British Royal Family

Hear ye, hear ye! The most famous dogs in England have arrived. No, they aren’t considered your everyday pups— they are official members of the British monarchy. Yes, the Royal Family are proud dog owners.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Royal Family have been known to love the presence of their doggies these past few years. Their furry companions have been by their side in both private and public occasions, and they’re never shy to pose for the cameras along with the United Kingdom’s most important family. Let’s take a quick look at our favorite Royal pooches over the decades.

The Queen

While Corgis don’t exactly belong to the list of rare dog breeds, that doesn’t stop Her Majesty from owning approximately 30 of them throughout her reign as Queen. These Pembroke Welsh Corgis have been on the Queen’s lap during her entire lifetime, so much so that her pups even appeared on a commemorative coin with her at the 2012 London Olympics!

Queen Elizabeth got her first corgi, Dookie, when she was only 18, and now she is the proud parent of a Corgi-Dachshund mix named Candy!

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall have had a long-standing relationship with canines over the years. Prince Charles himself has been popular for owning multiple Jack Russells during his early years. One Jack Russell pooch named Pooh even made the headlines for going missing in the forest during a trip. Pooh was, sadly, never found.

At the moment, Prince Charles and Princess Camilla happily own two Jack Russell terriers named Bluebell and Beth, whom they shared a photo with during their 15th anniversary shoot last year.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Prince William and Princess Kate have also been hoomans as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Their first dog as a couple, Lupo, became the Duchess’ trusted companion especially when the Duke served in the Royal Air Force. Lupo also appeared in photoshoots when the baby Prince George was born in 2013— a clear sign that he is a member of the family and great around kids!

Sadly, the royal pooch passed away peacefully in November 2020 after nine loyal years of service to the Duke and Duchess. Rest in peace, Lupo!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been causing quite a ruckus within the Royal Household for stepping down as senior members of the family and moving to Meghan’s native home of Southern California. However, we cannot deny how their adorable pooches have been stealing the spotlight as well!

The new family of three (Hello, little prince Archie!) currently own two wonderful doggos: a Beagle named Guy who was originally owned by Meghan, and a Black Labrador named Pula. While there are no new pooches to enter the Sussex clan, we can surely say that the former Duke and Duchess are canine lovers in their own right.

Dogs come and go, but the royal pups have inevitably become a part of history due to their long-standing relationships with their monarch dog owners. These dogs are a true testament that canines can be loyal, trusted, and good companions to human beings: royalty or not.
