‘Abandoned And Broken’ Shelter Dog Can’t Stop Smiling When He Realizes He’s Found A Forever Home

Sanford was found by animal control after being hit by a car. The poor dog couldn’t walk. He was also carrying a traumatic past.

Sanford had also been shot. Animal control took him to a Texas city shelter where he laid helpless and in pain for an entire week with no medical care.

Thankfully, a volunteer from Dallas DogRRR was at the shelter the following week. When she set eyes on Sanford, her heart broke for him.

The volunteer took Sanford into the rescue group’s care that then got him right into a nearby animal clinic for emergency treatment.

Sanford’s condition was so advanced that he had accepted that his death was impending.

“He was physically broken … and when the volunteer went to see him, he didn’t really make any effort to come and say hello, It’s almost like he had given up, and he was just waiting for his time to come.” Kerry Anechiarico, the executive director of Dallas DogRRR, told The Dodo.

Once Sanford was medically treated and able to be released from the animal hospital, he went to live with foster mom Karen Velazquez. It was as if a switch inside the “broken” dog flipped on!

“He came to my home on May 1, just a few days after he was released from the hospital,” Velazquez said. “He has been all smiles ever since. I think the minute he came to my home, he realized he was in a safe place.”

Velazquez added, “He looks at me in a way that no other animal or human has ever looked at me, including my own pets. Essentially, the only time he is not smiling is when he is asleep or eating.”

Just imagine how broken this poor dog must have been– to transform from “before” to “after” !!! It’s amazing!

The video below does not have an update but we have learned that Sanford has since found his forever home!
