While many people view their dogs as cherished family members, not everyone shares this sentiment.
A disturbing act of cruelty unfolded when a man from Indiana decided that his two dogs, Cosmo and Sam, were no longer convenient to keep.
Cosmo, a small Labrador Retriever mix, and Sam, a Pointer, had been a bonded pair of senior dogs and had shared a decade of their lives with their owner.
However, due to his upcoming move with his girlfriend, who was allergic to dogs, the owner deemed the dogs expendable.
Choosing what is often referred to as “convenience euthanasia,” the man took Cosmo and Sam to his local vet clinic with the intention of having them euthanized simply because they did not fit into his new life plans.
Thankfully, the veterinarian recognized that the dogs were both healthy and happy and refused to perform the euthanasia, believing it to be unjust.
Instead of meeting their end, Cosmo and Sam were transferred to Begin Again Rescue Co. (BARC), a foster-based, non-profit dog rescue in Valparaiso, Indiana.
At BARC, despite their initial heartbreak from the abandonment, the dogs began to recover. With the dedicated care of volunteers, they resumed eating, playing, and embracing life once more.
However, finding a new home for a bonded pair of senior dogs proved challenging. Several months passed without success until P.A.W.S. Tinley Park, a no-kill animal shelter in Illinois, stepped in to assist. Senior dogs typically face longer waits for adoption, but fortune smiled on Cosmo and Sam.
Eric and Tiffany Dybas, a couple still mourning the loss of their own dog, heard the story of Cosmo and Sam and were instantly moved. They decided to adopt the pair, providing them with a loving home where they could continue their lives together.
At their new home, Cosmo and Sam received the love and care they deserved. The shelter confirmed that the two dogs were thriving, enjoying their days being spoiled and cherished by their new family.
This heartwarming turn of events brought a happy resolution to a story that began with betrayal, showcasing the resilience of the canine spirit and the compassion of those who value animal welfare.
