In Geauga County, Ohio, a remarkable duo captured the hearts of their community and the world. Meet Midge, the rat terrier Chihuahua mix, who served as the smallest drug-sniffing police dog in history, and her handler, Sheriff Dan McClelland. Together, they formed an inseparable bond while serving the police department for over 16 years, leaving a legacy that will be remembered forever.

Midge’s small size allowed her to access areas that larger police dogs couldn’t reach. Unlike her more aggressive counterparts, Midge conducted her searches with remarkable gentleness, leaving no damage behind. She delicately inspected vehicles, avoiding any torn upholstery or dirty paw prints. Her ability to fit under cars or squeeze into tight spaces made her an invaluable asset to the department.

Sheriff McClelland, a dedicated 40-year veteran of the police force, was Midge’s constant companion. They were not only partners in fighting crime but also cherished friends. Their bond was unbreakable, with Midge faithfully by McClelland’s side 24/7. Their relationship was a testament to the incredible connection that can develop between a human and their loyal K9 partner.

However, life took an unexpected turn after McClelland retired from duty. He received a devastating diagnosis: brain cancer. Despite the challenges he faced, Midge remained steadfastly devoted, never leaving his side. Unfortunately, the day came when circumstances forced them apart. On April 14th, Sheriff Dan McClelland lost his courageous battle with cancer at a hospital near Cleveland, Ohio. He was 67 years old. Just six hours later, Midge passed away, seemingly from a broken heart.

Sheriff Scott Hildenbrand of Geauga County likened their deaths to that of a couple who have spent seventy years together, departing within hours of one another. It is evident that Sheriff McClelland was Midge’s entire world. For many years, they selflessly served their community side by side, leaving a lasting impact on those they encountered.

Known affectionately as Sheriff Dan, McClelland and Midge were widely recognized in the community and delighted in stopping to engage with Midge’s adoring fans. Their remarkable partnership led them to make appearances on daytime television shows and receive mentions in national magazines. Even in retirement, Midge maintained her K-9 certifications, a testament to her unwavering commitment.

After retiring from the force, Sheriff Dan, Midge, and his wife embarked on a journey to explore the country together. Sheriff Hildenbrand expressed his admiration, saying, “He spent 44 years protecting people in this county, and, quite frankly, he loved his job, every minute of it. I thought he’d never retire.” Sheriff McClelland’s dedication to his role and his community was evident to all who knew him.

In a touching tribute to their inseparable bond, Sheriff McClelland and Midge were laid to rest together. They shared many years side by side, and it was fitting that they would find their eternal rest in each other’s company.

Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the incredible connection that can form between humans and their four-legged companions. Please share this heartfelt tale with your loved ones, honoring the memory of Sheriff Dan McClelland and his devoted K9 partner, Midge.
